Coat alteration: The rediscovery of my leopard print coat

It was a Saturday; I still vividly remember spotting this incredible leopard-print fur coat in one of London’s well-known high-street shops. My forever dream coat. The coat was lush, luxurious, strong in colour and expression, a true signature piece I always wanted. A bit like Cate Blanchett’s coat in Cinderella, costume-designed by none other than the legendary Sandy Powell. It was beyond my budget; I saw it, I wanted it, I bought it, without reasoning, one size too big. Because others had also noticed the precious piece, only two sizes were left.

In my dreams, I had created many fabulous looks with my new signature piece, but until I found an expert alteration company that didn’t exist, the coat spent longer than two seasons in my wardrobe. It was too big, the shape unflattering. I loved it, but hadn’t worn it; the labels were still attached. Whenever I put it on, something was holding me back from wearing it. The fit just wasn’t right for me.

Moving house often means tidying up. So, I was flicking through my wardrobe. I had to do something with my beautiful coat, or it had to go, together with many other items.

After some research, I made an appointment with a so-called designer alteration company nearby and collected my leopard-print coat a week later. It was transformed; it fitted so well on the shoulders and at the waist. The length was perfect. I turned in front of the mirror and was over the moon. Finally, I was able to wear my chosen beauty with confidence. I should have done this a long time ago.

The experience of altering my coat showed me how valuable alterations can be. Just fixing the fit can turn something into a favourite you’ll love for years.

Choosing the right alteration or tailoring company can be tricky with so many options out there. For simple, everyday clothes, a service near a dry cleaner can handle basic jobs. Companies like JOJO and the Seam now make it easy to find tailors and seamstresses for quick fixes and repairs. If you have more complicated or valuable pieces, it’s best to go with an experienced specialist. Take time to research, compare companies, read reviews, and ask friends or family for recommendations. Some places even offer home fittings, which can be convenient.
